It’s a common misconception that a bride who is planning her own wedding isn’t also serving in an official wedding planner role. When I interviewed several wedding planners intending to hire one, I couldn’t find a best fit candidate. I thought to myself, “Why can’t I take that role on myself?”
I can be a full-service planner. I’ve produced events at small and large scale (e.g. 5-10 participants to 300+) and know the ins-and-outs of contacting vendors. I know and trust that all the work I’ve done over a year and 4 months leading up to the finale is golden. However, I also understand there are limitations in this role as I could not be both a bride and a working professional on my wedding day. I made sure to find the perfect day-of-wedding coordinator to carry out the final details on D-Day.
The most challenging aspect of planning your own wedding is balancing my needs vs my guests’ needs. I’m in a unique situation where not only do I have to play the “bride” role, but also as the “wedding planner”. Negotiation truly is an art.
I most definitely feel that most of the family/bridal party views me as a bride first and planner second.
